For years, one of the biggest frustrations with AI search was measurement. You could see your brand appearing in AI Overviews or hear that customers had discovered you through an AI assistant, but proving that visibility with first-party data was difficult.
Google has started closing that gap with the Search Console generative AI report. Launched in June 2026 and rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026, the report gives website owners a dedicated view of impressions generated through Google’s AI search experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
It is useful, but it is not a complete AI analytics dashboard. Understanding what the numbers actually mean, and what they do not mean, is essential before making SEO decisions based on them.
What Does the Search Console Generative AI Report Show?
The report answers one important question: how often is Google showing pages from your website inside its generative AI search features?

Inside the Search report, you can analyse AI visibility by:

The chart shows total generative AI impressions for the selected period. Google defines an impression here as a situation where a link to your site is shown to a user within a supported generative AI feature.
The important limitation is what you do not get. The dedicated report does not currently give you a clean breakdown of clicks, CTR, rankings or search queries.
So, treat the report as a visibility report, not a traffic or conversion report.
How to Monitor AI Search Visibility
To monitor AI search visibility properly, start with trends rather than individual numbers.
Open the generative AI report under Performance in Search Console and compare meaningful periods, such as the latest 28 days against the previous 28 days.
Then work through three levels.
1. Track total AI impressions
Are AI impressions increasing, flat or declining?
Growth tells you that Google is surfacing your content more often within AI-generated results. It does not automatically mean more traffic, enquiries or revenue.
2. Identify the pages earning AI visibility
Switch to the Pages dimension and look for patterns.
You might find that detailed guides, comparison pages, FAQs or expert explainers appear more frequently than short promotional pages. That tells you something about the content Google considers useful when constructing AI answers.
From a GEO reporting perspective, this page-level view is particularly valuable. It helps you identify content that already has generative search visibility so you can strengthen it rather than guessing which pages AI systems prefer.
3. Compare AI visibility with normal search performance
The new report should not be analysed in isolation.
Google says generative AI performance data is already included within the Web search type in the standard Search Console performance report. In other words, the AI report is a dedicated view into part of your existing search visibility, not an additional pool of impressions you should add to your totals.
Combine it with conventional rankings, clicks and conversions to understand whether increasing AI visibility is contributing to the broader search journey.
How to Track AI Traffic in Google Analytics
Search Console tells you about visibility. GA4 helps you understand what happens when someone actually visits your website.
This became easier in May 2026 when Google Analytics introduced an AI Assistant channel in its Default Channel Group. Recognised traffic from AI assistants can now be automatically assigned the ai-assistant medium and grouped under AI Assistant.
To check AI traffic in GA4:

Add Session source/medium if you want to see which platforms are sending traffic.
Google lists services such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples of traffic that may fall into the AI Assistant channel.
There is one major distinction to understand: clicks from Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode remain classified as Organic Search, not AI Assistant.
That means there is still no simple GA4 filter that tells you, “This organic session came specifically from an AI Overview.”
How to Track AI Usage Across the Customer Journey
Knowing how to measure AI search visibility requires more than one platform.
Think about AI measurement as three layers:
Visibility: Use Search Console to see whether your pages appear within Google’s generative AI search experiences.
Traffic: Use GA4’s AI Assistant channel to track identifiable visits from supported external AI platforms.
Business outcomes: Measure enquiries, purchases, bookings, downloads or other key events associated with those sessions.
This prevents a common reporting mistake: treating AI impressions as if they were traffic.
A page could receive thousands of AI impressions and almost no measurable visits. Another page may generate only modest visibility but attract highly qualified users who later enquire.
The objective is not simply to maximise AI appearances. It is to understand whether AI visibility is supporting meaningful customer journeys.
